A Leone Stars home-based dominated squad conceded an early goal to suffer a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Iraq in a friendly international match in Istanbul, Turkey on Wednesday.

Nashat Akram saw Leone Stars goalie Christian Caulker out of his goalie line and volleyed in from a very far distance to account for the only goal of the game.

It was the first ever meeting between the two countries at all levels in international football. Leone Stars used the game as part of their preparation plans for their 2014 World Cup and 2013 African Nations Cup qualifying matches in June.

Leone Stars will also face Jordan in another World Cup and Nations Cup build-up match on Saturday.

Sierra Leone open their World Cup campaign against Cape Verde at home on June 2, before traveling to Malabo or Bata to engage Equatorial Guinea a week later.

They will host Sao Tome & Principe the following week in the return leg of the first round of the Nations Cup qualifiers.
